About Logan & Why Logan Loves
Logan and his identical twin brother Owen were born in 2003 as monochorionic/monoamniotic twins, one of the rarest forms of identical twins with less than a 15% chance of survival. Each had multiple congenital defects with Logan having a severely underdeveloped heart—quite literally half of a heart. The doctors told our family we’d be lucky to carry them to term and that, in order to give one a better chance at survival, we should consider selective reduction. That action was never an option for us—God had blessed us with twins and by His grace we prayed He would allow them to not only make it to term but survive and thrive. And He did. However, we knew at some point, his half of a heart would begin to fail and a transplant would be needed.
Logan underwent two open heart surgeries at four months and 3 ½ and endured a myriad of other heart-related and other complications on and off during his first 13 years but he never lost his zest for life and being a terrific kid, along with his brother Owen. In June 2016 Logan was listed for a transplant and on July 20, 2016 that the call came! He received his new and perfect (and full!) heart on July 21, 2016 at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Miraculously, Logan was out of the hospital just eight days after his transplant and we returned home to Minnesota. Following a severe episode of heart rejection in September 2016, complications from the EBV virus and another rejection from January through May 2019 resulting in heart failure and coronary artery disease, Logan was placed on the list for another transplant on November 29, 2019. The miraculous call for another heart came December 21, 2019.
Through it all, Logan has become quite the professional patient and knows the ins and outs of what makes a hospital experience positive. He would like to share some of the things he loves with other children and families who spend time at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital through the Logan Loves Foundation..Please See Our Mission.
